“But Mom, you’re also a princess.”

You reach for the cup with a smile and gesture for her to sit up properly. Rosalie does so deliberately. She’s always careful not to hurt you, no matter what it concerns. Now she looks expectantly, sitting upright in my lap. Her feet wiggle in anticipation.

“Yeah, but I’m not that special. That’s why I drink coffee.” You hand her the cup. Rosalie takes it in her two small hands and squints at the cream. I’m ready to intervene as she brings the cup up to her pursed lips, sipping cautiously.

You push Zayden’s cup across the table and he looks up at Carter, who leans over and takes the cup. He hands it to Zayden, who makes no move to grab it, but leans forward and sips from the cup.

Carter chuckles softly as Zayden makes noises of delight.

“So yummy, Mom,” Rosalie says, nodding in your direction. You look like you’re about to get a sugar rush, though for different reasons than her. I pull you down next to us on the couch as Zayden leans in to take another sip. Carter is so patient with him. He’s revealing a whole new side.

“Can you pour me a cup, baby?” I ask you, not wanting to interrupt Rosalie’s cocoa orgy. You sit down next to us, pour two cups, and hand me one. “Thanks.” I take a sip and the three adults take a breath. I stretch my arm across the backrest and pull you close to me. Fuck, Alayna. Everything will change starting tomorrow, provided we’re lucky.

If not... I don’t even want to think about the outcome, baby.
